What form of Tamazight to learn?
The word “Tamazight” can designate Amazigh in the broad sense or, in a specific Moroccan context, the Tamazight of central Morocco. To choose a course, indicate your objective: to speak the tariff of your family from the Rif, the Tachelhit of Souss or the Tamazight of the Atlas. A general title is not enough to know what conversation you are going to learn.
Before choosing a resource, look for a region indication, an audio clip, and a teacher presentation. If you are learning with a loved one, ask them to name their language and location. Our guide to the Amazigh varieties of Morocco helps to orient you.
Building your first phrase book
Create three columns: what you mean in French, the wording in your variety and a context note. Start with five needs: greet, thank, introduce yourself, ask to repeat and take leave. Have each sentence checked before memorizing it.
When your interlocutor accepts it, record their voice and keep one short example per sentence. Repeat after recording, then respond without looking at your notebook. A phrase understood and reused serves you more than a list that you do not recognize orally.
A seven-day program to get started
- Day 1: specify your variety and the first situation to prepare.
- Day 2: learn a greeting and response; play both roles.
- Day 3: add a thank you and a formula to end the exchange.
- Day 4: have a short presentation checked with your first name.
- Day 5: choose three words related to your daily life and listen to them in a sentence.
- Day 6: locate the letters of a word you already know.
- Day 7: Replay your first conversation and note what you are missing.
Allow ten minutes per session. This program is used to install a practice; it does not correspond to a guaranteed level at the end of the week. Repeat for a day when the sentences do not yet come back spontaneously.
When to start tifinagh?
You can discover writing alongside speaking. Take a known word, look at its written form and associate each sign with a sound. The Tifinagh Alphabet Chart allows you to start with a few letters.
If your course uses the Latin alphabet, keep its conventions in your notebook. Mixing multiple transcriptions without understanding the correspondences complicates proofreading. A sheet must always remind you of the variety and writing used.
Choose resources that complement each other
