Algerian Arabic–French translation: a practical guide

A family message, a word in Arabic characters or a sentence written with numbers sometimes requires more context than a word-for-word translation.

The answer in a few words

To translate from Algerian to French, keep the entire sentence and specify that it is Algerian darija. To translate into Algerian, indicate who you are speaking to and in what situation. This page is a method guide; it does not contain an interactive translator.

What should we give to the translator?

Add the previous message, the region if you know it and the desired tone. A short formula can be a greeting, a thank you or a response depending on the exchange. An isolated translation risks choosing the wrong meaning.

Do not modify letters or numbers before searching: automatic correction may erase a clue. For a voice note, work on a brief excerpt whose content you are allowed to share, then ask to point out any uncertain words.

Translation examples in context

Algerian DarijaEnglishContext
Wesh rak ?How are you?Question addressed to a man.
Rani mli7a.I'm fine.Answer given by a woman.
Ghali bezzaf. It’s very expensive.Reaction to the announced price.
Lmekla bnina. The meal is delicious.Comment on the meal.

These examples illustrate the overall meaning. They are not a basis for mechanically replacing words in a new sentence. Grammatical agreement, pronouns and context must remain consistent.

Why do we write with 3, 7 or 9?

In the messages, numbers represent Arabic sounds that are difficult to note with a Latin keyboard. We find in particular 3 = ع , 7 = ح and 9 = ق . Habits vary; the same sentence can have several spellings.

Transcription makes a sentence readable, but is not a translation. Ask separately for the original text, its transcription and its meaning. A result in Standard Arabic does not automatically correspond to the way people speak in Algeria.

How to ask an AI?

A useful prompt: “Translate this sentence into Algerian Arabic for a conversation in Algiers. I am speaking to a female friend. Give a common phrasing, its literal meaning and a Latin transcription. Explain any uncertainty.” Then add your sentence.

  1. Reread the meaning in French to verify the intention.
  2. Check the recipient and the level of familiarity.
  3. Compare a short sentence to a recording or ask a speaker.
  4. Keep only one validated version for your next conversation.
