Darija to English: Understand Moroccan Messages

A short message can mix darija, French, Latin characters and numbers. This guide helps you understand the intent of the message before preparing your response.

Getting started

First identify the language and the situation, then translate the entire sentence. Numbers in a word can represent consonants. The examples below concern Moroccan darija; they do not replace a context check.

Eight short messages and their meaning

Latin spellings vary. The proposed forms are reading cues, not a single spelling. The meaning column follows the language of that page.

Message in DarijaEnglishHow to understand it
Salam, labas ?Hi, how are you?A friendly conversation opener.
WakhaOkayCan confirm a proposal; does not by itself specify the time or place.
DabaNowAsk for clarification if the appointment depends on an exact time.
Fin ?Where? The location depends on what was said before.
Bsh7al ?How much?Often a question of price in a commercial exchange.
ShwiyaA littleCan describe a quantity; the context determines which.
Shukran bzzafThank you very muchA thank you that can be sent after a service.
BslamaGoodbyeA way to end an exchange.

For an isolated word, also consult our 95-word dictionary . For a loving message, use the love message guide with details of the recipient.

Why do we see 3, 7 and 9 in messages?

In some informal transcriptions, 3 represents the Arabic consonant ع , 7 represents ح and 9 represents ق . A number in the middle of a word therefore does not necessarily read like a number. These conventions are not used in the same way by everyone.

Compare 3afak with "please" and bsh7al with "how much". To learn sounds, combine the written form with a recording: transcription alone does not fully convey the accent or rhythm. See our pronunciation guide .

Translate without inventing what the message does not say

  • Keep the previous sentence: it can clarify what “where” or “now” means.
  • Tell the translator that it is Moroccan Darija, then specify the output language.
  • Ask for an explanation of the ambiguous words and a short response tailored to the relationship.
  • For a time, amount or address, have the details confirmed explicitly.

Do not infer tone solely from punctuation. A very short response may be a writing habit rather than a sign of anger. If two interpretations remain possible, ask a question instead of sending an answer based on an assumption.

An exercise: responding to a proposition

You suggest meeting at the café. Your friend responds Wakha . What information have you received, and what remains to be confirmed?

See correction

The reply expresses agreement. It does not specify the café or the time. Confirm both details in a language you share before you leave.

Then create your own notebook with three columns: the original message, the meaning in the situation and a verified response. Revise the same example a few days later, without looking at the meaning.
