The answer in a few words
When translating Kabyle into French, specify “Kabyle” or taqbaylit , preserve letters such as ɛ and ɣ , and provide the complete sentence. To translate into Kabyle, explain who you are addressing and the situation. This page offers a method and examples, rather than a live translation tool.
Why specify Kabyle rather than just Amazigh?
Amazigh designates a set of languages and varieties. A Tachelhit or Tariffit resource does not automatically provide the formulation used in Kabyle. The word “Algerian” is not enough either: it can be understood as a request for Algerian darija.
For a family message, add the region and context when you know them. If the text mixes Kabyle, Arabic and French, keep the mixture and ask to identify the passages instead of treating everything as a single language.
Some useful translations
| Kabyle | English | Mark |
|---|---|---|
| Azul fell-awen | Hello to you all. | Greeting addressed to a group. |
| Isem-iw … | My name is… | Presentation of the speaker. |
| Tanemmirt | Thank you. | Thanks. |
| Tanemmirt seg wul | Thank you from the bottom of my heart. | Thanks. |
A memorized phrase serves as a limited template. To construct a different message, you have to check the grammar and pronouns; changing just one word can produce an incorrect sentence.
Should the text be converted into Tifinagh?
Kabyle is commonly written with an adapted Latin alphabet. Retain special letters, double consonants and hyphens from the received text. Replacing ɣ with a simple g may cause a distinction to be lost.
Changing the alphabet is a transliteration, not a translation. You can understand the meaning in French without converting the text to Tifinagh. Our guide to Kabyle writing presents useful reading points.
How to check an answer given by an AI?
- Ask for a translation of the entire sentence, then an explanation of important words.
- Clarify the pronouns: who is speaking and to whom?
- Request that uncertain words be flagged.
- Compare a short expression to a dictionary or documented sentences.
- Have important messages verified by a competent speaker.
Example prompt: “Translate this message into French. It is in Kabyle and comes from a family conversation. Keep proper names and flag ambiguous passages.” Add the message and the previous reply if it helps.
A smooth translation is not proof of accuracy. Lmed provides example sentences, and the Berber Research Center Kabyle–French dictionary can help with words. The meaning of an expression must nevertheless be verified in its context.
