Learn Moroccan Darija when you start from scratch

Darija has no school grammar to revise: it is a street language that we learn by speaking. Here's where to start, the words that come up all the time, and a simple method to speak Moroccan quickly.

Is Darija difficult to learn?

For the conversation , no. Darija does not have formal conjugations to memorize like in a textbook. You can start exchanging with a few dozen words and expressions. The difficulty lies elsewhere: some guttural sounds (noted 3 , 7 , 9 ) and the fact that it is learned mainly by ear, not in a book.

The essential words to get started

EnglishDarijaArabic
Hello Salam / Sbah l-khir سلام
Are you okay? Labas ? لاباس؟
Yes / No Iyeh / La إيه / لا
Thank you Shukran شكرا
Please 3afak عفاك

Okay Wakha واخا

A simple 4-step method

  1. Start with situations, not grammar. Greetings, prices, taxi, coffee: what you will use from day one.
  2. Learn out loud. Darija is an oral language — repeat each phrase until it sounds right.
  3. Choose a script. Latin letters to go quickly, Arabic writing to progress. The two together help memorize.
  4. Revise little but often. 5 minutes a day is better than 1 hour a week.
